About
Echeveria colorata is endemic to Mexico; a Japanese reference gives Jalisco as its home. It is an evergreen perennial succulent whose thick leaves form rosettes up to about 40 cm across. The leaves are pale green to silvery under a white bloom, and the whole plant flushes pink in winter; colorata means 'coloured'. Variants include 'Mexican Giant', f. brandtii and 'Tapalpa', and E. lindsayana is treated as a synonym. It is an important parent of many hybrids, including E. 'Beatrice' and ×Graptoveria 'Opalina'. Japanese growers class it as a spring–autumn grower and one of the toughest species echeverias, good for beginners. It flowers freely, so cut spent stems unless you want seed. Offsetting plants can be divided, and others propagated from leaves. The white bloom reduces water loss and shields the leaves from strong light, so avoid rubbing it off. It is a widely available species, found even in ordinary garden centres in Japan.
