Preparing Tools and Strict Sanitation

This is the crux of successful union. If the scion is smaller than the rootstock, adjust the position so the scion's vascular bundle rests on the rootstock's vascular bundle. Prioritize aligning the vascular bundles—do not position it to the side
  1. Securing: Thread a rubber band from the top of the scion down to the base of the rootstock and tighten it. Placing a light weight (coins wrapped in plastic wrap) on top of the scion is also effective. Insufficient pressure reduces grafting success

Post-Grafting Care and Long-Term Maintenance

After successful union, gradually transition to normal growing conditions. Maintain indirect light for the first 1–2 weeks, then gradually acclimate to more sunlight from week 3 onward.

Removing rootstock shoots: Remove shoots that emerge from the sides of the rootstock regularly. If left unchecked, the rootstock's nutrients feed the shoots rather than the scion, severely inhibiting scion growth. Remove them while small using your fingertips or a clean knife.

Managing rootstock lifespan: After successful grafting, long-term concern centers on the rootstock's lifespan. Dragon fruit cactus in particular may weaken after 5–10 years. If the rootstock shrinks or the scion's growth suddenly stops, suspect rootstock decline. Re-grafting is necessary in such cases. To preserve valuable scions, develop the habit of checking your rootstock's condition 1–2 times per year.

Watering and fertilizing: Because grafted plants grow more vigorously than own-rooted plants, water them slightly more frequently. However, excessive moisture invites rootstock root rot, so be careful. Fertilize monthly 1–2 times with a dilute liquid fertilizer emphasizing phosphorus and potassium to promote vigorous scion development.
