The moon cactus (also called ruby ball) is a variegated cultivar of Gymnocalycium mihanovichii whose defining trait is a ball-shaped body that contains no chlorophyll and is therefore entirely red (or orange, yellow, or pink). The parent species is the South American (Paraguayan) chin cactus G. mihanovichii; its red variegated mutation was selected and developed in Japan into the fully red form. Lacking chlorophyll, the colored ball cannot photosynthesize and cannot live on its own, so it must be grafted onto the top of a green columnar cactus rootstock — every moon cactus on sale is a grafted plant. Hylocereus (three-angled) stock is common but short-lived (2-4 years); grafting onto longer-lived stock such as Myrtillocactus extends its life. Care follows that of the green rootstock: bright light (avoid harsh direct sun, which scorches it), watering when dry in the growing season, and sparingly in winter. Because it has no chlorophyll, it is best enjoyed for the vivid form it has when purchased rather than as a long-term grower. Colorful, small, and inexpensive, it is hugely popular for beginners and as decor.
