1. 1Give it plenty of light

   Cuts or wounds release a milky white sap. It can irritate skin, so wear gloves when handling the plant and rinse thoroughly with water if it touches you. Keep the plant out of reach of pets and small children who might put it in their mouths.

   Look for firm stems with clearly defined white striping, no soft, discolored patches or sunken areas, and a base that does not wobble. A brown, hardened base is often just a sign of age. Crested forms such as Shunpo are sometimes grafted, so it is worth asking the seller.
