Unlike typical flowers, the "flower" of Dorstenia consists of a flattened, fleshy, disc-shaped receptacle (flower-bearing axis) with countless minute flowers densely packed on its surface, creating a structure close to a false fruit. With an appearance resembling a flattened fig, this unique form is botanically known as a "hypocrateriform inflorescence." After flowering, the plant produces seeds through self-pollination, and as the fruit dries, it ruptures to disperse seeds up to several tens of centimeters away through an auto-dispersal mechanism.

Beneath the soil surface develops a fleshy caudex that stores water and nutrients, allowing the plant to survive the dry season even as its aboveground portion withers, preparing for the return of the rainy season. Indoors, a bright location with lace-curtain-filtered light or a position 1–2 meters from a window is ideal. If light is insufficient, leaves become elongated and lanky, and inflorescence formation diminishes, so aim for "bright but without direct sun"—a delicate balance.

When growing outdoors, be careful of intense light after the rainy season ends. Gradually increase the shade ratio from spring onward, and use a shade cloth with 50–70% light blockage in summer to prevent caudex deterioration. From autumn through winter, bring the plant indoors and manage it in bright window locations to prevent etiolation from insufficient light.

The ideal temperature range is 18–28°C during the growing season (May–October), and 10–15°C during dormancy. Below 5°C, the caudex is susceptible to cold injury, so winter care requires careful attention to minimum temperatures.

Seasonal Watering Approach

The crux of Dorstenia cultivation is water management that follows the seasonal cycle. Adapted to the dry and rainy season rhythms of their native habitat, giving water at the same rate year-round will cause root rot.

During the growing season (May–October), water needs are highest. Water thoroughly once the soil surface dries, but ensure the pot drains immediately with no standing water at the bottom. Particularly during July–September when inflorescences emerge successively, plant activity is vigorous, so monitor drying frequently.

During the dormancy transition period (November–December), gradually extend the interval between waterings as leaves age. Apply water with the feeling of waiting several days after the soil dries completely, reducing frequency to 3–4 times per month.

During dormancy (January–March), the aboveground portion largely disappears, leaving only the caudex. Excess moisture during this period is the primary cause of root rot. Once or twice a month, provide only minimal water to prevent the caudex from completely drying out. As a guideline, "keep the caudex slightly firm when touched by hand."

During the awakening period (April), new shoots begin to emerge from the caudex. Do not rush—confirm the emergence of new growth before gradually increasing water, transitioning into the growing season.

Choosing Substrate and Pots

Drainage and aeration are the top priorities. A standard mix example uses the ratio: Kanuma soil (medium grain) 4 : Akadama soil (small grain) 2 : Perlite 2 : Bark 1 : Charred soil 1. What matters is not adherence to specific substrates but rather that "water does not stagnate inside the pot." Ideal drainage is achieved when, after pressing the surface with a finger, no moisture oozes out.

Unglazed ceramic or Kanuma terracotta pots are most suitable. Unglazed pots allow water to evaporate through the sides, drying the interior faster and reducing root rot risk. Plastic pots retain too much moisture and are best avoided unless used intentionally by experienced growers. Keep the pot size only slightly larger than the caudex to prevent excess substrate volume from causing waterlogging.

Repot every 2–3 years, ideally during the awakening period in April. Gently remove old soil without damaging the roots; if any are damaged, trim them cleanly with sterile scissors, dry the cut surfaces, and plant in fresh substrate.

Pests, Diseases, and Daily Observation

The most frequently encountered problem is root rot. Winter overwatering is the primary cause; if the caudex begins to soften and discolor, act quickly. Remove the affected portion with a clean blade, dry it, and apply a fungicide (such as Benomyl) as emergency treatment.

Spider mites thrive in dry indoor environments; if leaves appear whitish and stippled, check the leaf undersides. Regular misting of the entire plant helps prevent infestation. Mealybugs appear as white, cottony clusters at leaf bases and in caudex grooves. In early stages, remove them with an ethanol-soaked cotton swab; if widespread, consider pesticide application.

Daily observation of leaf color, firmness, and inflorescence emergence helps gauge plant health. A healthy Dorstenia produces inflorescences frequently and has thick, glossy leaves. If leaves yellow and drop excessively, suspect either insufficient light or overwatering.
