A system combining commercial steel canisters (CO2 canisters) with a solenoid valve is the most stable, with a goal of maintaining aquatic CO2 concentration at approximately 20-30ppm. Use a bubble counter to adjust the flow to approximately 1-2 bubbles per second, and distribute it throughout the tank with water flow. Fermentation-based systems (utilizing sugar and yeast) keep costs low, but because supply volume is unstable, they are not suitable when aiming for genuine red coloring.

In terms of nutrition, supplementing trace elements through liquid fertilizer directly affects color expression. In particular, iron (Fe) is deeply involved in red to orange toning, and many cases have been reported where color depth increases when iron-containing liquid fertilizer is added 1-2 times per week. Macro elements (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) naturally accumulate in tanks where fish are kept, but tend to be deficient in tanks focused on aquatic plants. Add a comprehensive all-in-one liquid fertilizer regularly in small amounts, adjusting the quantity while observing the results. Excessive addition can lead to algae blooms, so it is safe to start at 50-75% of the recommended dose.


Fundamentals of Water Quality, Substrate, and Planting

The appropriate range for water quality is pH 6.5-7.5, and total hardness (GH) is approximately 4-8 dGH (German hardness) as a guideline. In extremely soft water, minerals are easily deficient and leaves tend to yellow. Remove and thin out any plants that grow too abundantly, ensuring each plant receives adequate light and nutrients to maintain their coloring. If left to grow too densely, lower leaves won't receive light, leading to yellowing and leaf drop, so proper density management is important.


Common Problems and Solutions

  • Leaves turning yellow: Iron or magnesium deficiency is suspected. If only the veins remain green while the leaf tissue yellows, this is a sign of iron deficiency. Add iron-containing liquid fertilizer and check that the pH is not too high. When pH exceeds 7.5, iron tends to precipitate in water.
  • Lower leaves continuously dropping: Some lower leaf drop is natural, but if it progresses rapidly, insufficient CO2 or light is usually the cause. Review your CO2 addition amount and check that light is reaching the lower parts. If plants are densely packed, thin them out so light reaches to the bottom.
  • Massive algae blooms: Environments where black beard algae or cyanobacteria thrive are often caused by stagnant water flow or accumulation of organic matter. Adjust the filter outlet direction to create water flow throughout the tank, and establish a habit of regularly removing uneaten food and dead leaves. Introducing algae-eating fauna (such as plecos or Yamato shrimp) is also effective, but select fish with consideration for their compatibility with aquatic plants.
  • Color not developing / remains green: Insufficient light is the most common cause. Increase the wattage of your lighting or extend the lighting duration, and also review your CO2 addition amount. Adding iron-containing liquid fertilizer is also effective for red coloring. It may take 2-4 weeks from the time you change conditions until you actually see color change, so it's important to continue observing without rushing.
