Agave desmettiana is a medium to moderately large species said to originate from Veracruz and other parts of eastern Mexico. Its relatively soft, glossy green to blue-green leaves arch gracefully outward, giving the plant a flowing, almost fountain-like form. The teeth are small and the overall plant is safer to work with than many agaves. Mature rosettes reach 60–100 cm tall and 100–150 cm wide. Water somewhat more generously than typical agaves—when the soil dries, water thoroughly. The yellow-margined cultivar 'Variegata' is extremely popular among collectors.
