About
'Ouhi Raijin' ('queen thunder god') is a Japanese trade name for a dwarf selection of Agave potatorum (Japanese 'Raijin') or its close relative A. isthmensis from southern Mexico. A. isthmensis was treated as a form of potatorum until it was described in 1993, and both have been called Raijin in Japan, so some sellers list Ouhi Raijin under potatorum while other sources, including a US specialist nursery, list it under isthmensis. According to a Japanese plant guide, it has short, thick, tightly packed leaves, reaches only about 15 cm tall and 20 cm across, and has rather modest teeth. Related 'Kabutogani' has fused teeth and 'Yookihi' is striped, which tells them apart. A US specialist nursery notes that this line produces offsets from the leaf axils rather than from underground runners. Its raiser and introduction are not documented. Variegated plants are sold separately as Ouhi Raijin Nishiki. Small and easy to keep indoors, it is a popular cultivar widely sold in Japan by garden centres and online.
