Agave victoriae-reginae 'Kizan'

Kizan is a yellow-margined selection of the Queen Victoria agave (Agave victoriae-reginae), native to the Chihuahuan Desert of northern Mexico. According to a Japanese succulent encyclopedia, the outer edges of the leaves are yellow, the contrast varies between plants, and those with stronger contrast are the most popular. The parent species, according to a US grower, is a small agave about 30 cm tall and 45 cm wide with tightly packed, tapering deep green leaves whose smooth, toothless margins are edged white, ending in a small tip spine. It grows slowly, flowers only at considerable age, and usually dies after flowering without offsetting. The epithet honours Queen Victoria. Hyouzan, another variegated form of the species, has white margins, so the colour of the variegation separates the two. No source documents its raiser or history. Variegated plants grow even more slowly than plain ones and the variegated tissue scorches easily, so soften the strongest summer sun. In Japan it is offered by specialist nurseries and online shops.
