About
Hyouzan is a variegated cultivar of the Queen Victoria agave (Agave victoriae-reginae), native to the Chihuahuan Desert of northern Mexico. A US grower describes rosettes 25-30 cm tall and about 38-45 cm wide, with tightly packed, tapering deep green leaves whose smooth, toothless margins carry broad white bands, and a small but stout tip spine. It is known abroad as 'Albomarginata', has passed through names such as 'Hyou Zan', and is now commonly called White Rhino. A Japanese succulent encyclopedia likewise points to its translucent pure-white edging, slow growth and scarce offsets. The US grower increases stock by coring mother plants to induce offsets. Under the Hyouzan name there is also an even whiter 'Hanno' type and a centre-variegated 'Hyouzan white medio' form, which differ from the margined Hyouzan in where the variegation lies. It is prone to rot, so drainage and careful watering matter. In Japan it is sold mainly by specialist nurseries.
