About
Cephalotus follicularis, the Albany pitcher plant, is the sole species of the monotypic family Cephalotaceae, found exclusively in a small area of coastal southwestern Western Australia near Albany. It is not closely related to any other pitcher plant and represents an independent evolutionary origin of the pitcher-trap mechanism. Each plant produces two types of leaves: flat, photosynthetic phyllodes and highly modified, urn-shaped pitchers equipped with a lid, ribbed peristome, and two wings, all finely detailed for their small size. Cultivation requires a balance of moderate humidity and good air circulation, nutrient-poor media (sphagnum or peat-perlite), pure or rainwater, bright indirect to weak direct light, and cool to moderate temperatures (10–25°C). Growth is notably slow. Its status as a monotypic genus with an extraordinary evolutionary story makes it among the most coveted species for carnivorous plant collectors.
