About

Nepenthes rajah is a carnivorous pitcher plant of the family Nepenthaceae endemic to Mount Kinabalu and the neighbouring Mount Tambuyukon in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. It grows exclusively on serpentine substrates, particularly in areas of seeping groundwater where the soil is loose and permanently moist, at altitudes of 1,500–2,650 m above sea level. The species produces the largest pitchers of any Nepenthes, with a capacity exceeding 3.5 liters; besides insects, the pitchers have been documented to contain drowned rats and other small vertebrates. N. rajah is classified as Endangered by the IUCN and listed on CITES Appendix I due to its extremely restricted distribution. Cultivation requires cool highland conditions (days 20–25°C, nights 10–15°C), sphagnum-based media with excellent aeration, and high humidity, making it a challenging but coveted species for advanced collectors.
