Euphorbia Cylindrifolia
IntermediateEuphorbia cylindrifolia
A small Euphorbia with cylindrical leaves and caudex, endemic to Madagascar.
About
Euphorbia cylindrifolia is a small caudex euphorbia from the arid regions of southern Madagascar. Its defining feature, as the name implies, is its cylindrical leaves—a highly distinctive form not found in other succulents, which greatly enhances its collectibility. The plant is compact, with a flat caudex or swollen stem base from which slender branches with cylindrical leaves emerge. Subspecies and varieties show slight variation in leaf and caudex form. Flowers are small and inconspicuous. Damaged tissue produces toxic white latex requiring careful handling. Growth is slow. It thrives under full sun to bright indirect light in extremely porous soil. Restrained watering during the growing season and complete winter drought are essential, as overwatering readily causes root rot. Winter temperatures must remain above 10°C. Its small footprint and uniquely shaped leaves make it an appealing minimalist addition to any collection.
