About

Gasteria is a genus of succulent plants in the family Asphodelaceae, native to South Africa and the southwestern corner of Namibia. The genus name derives from the Latin for stomach, referring to the inflated base of the tubular flowers. Young plants produce leaves in two opposite rows, often transitioning to a rosette arrangement at maturity. Leaf surfaces typically display white tubercles or horizontal banding, giving them a superficial resemblance to Haworthia. Species range from compact 5 cm miniatures to robust plants 40 cm or more across. Gasterias are notably shade-tolerant, thriving in bright indirect light and making excellent houseplants. Watering should be moderate, allowing the soil to dry between sessions. Strong direct summer sun causes leaf scorch. Cold tolerance extends to approximately 0–5°C. Plants offset freely, making division the easiest propagation method.
