About
Gymnocalycium saglionis is a cactus from north-western Argentina (Jujuy, Salta, Tucumán, Catamarca, La Rioja and San Juan), where it grows on rocky hills at 240-2,600 m and is common. The stem is flattened-globular to shortly cylindrical, 30 (to 40) cm across and 15-30 cm tall, occasionally up to 90 cm, making it the largest species in the genus. The dull green to blue-green body has low, broad ribs broken into rounded tubercles, and the spines are yellowish-brown, reddish or black, turning grey with age and curving outward. It does not offset and grows as a single head. White to pale pink flowers with a red throat, about 2-3 cm across, form a crown at the apex repeatedly through the growing season, followed by red globular fruit. 'Shintenchi-nishiki' is a yellow-variegated form of the same species whose variegated patches sunburn easily. In Japan seed-grown plants are sold mainly by specialist nurseries, and variegated plants are rarely seen at ordinary garden centres.
