About
Mammillaria bocasana is a cactus from north-central Mexico (San Luis Potosí, Zacatecas, Querétaro and nearby) at 1,650-2,300 m, growing among volcanic rock on canyon walls and under shrubs in semi-desert. The type locality, Sierra de Bocas, gives the species its name. It is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN. Stems are globular to somewhat cylindrical, 5-8 (-12) cm tall and 3-6 (-8) cm across, light green to bluish-green, offsetting into large mounds. Each areole has 30-50 silky white hair-like radial spines 8-20 mm long, which make the plant look like a cotton ball. Beneath them are 1-7 reddish-brown centrals 5-10 mm long, one (occasionally two) hooked like a fish-hook; in Mexico the spines are said to have been used as fish-hooks. Cream flowers appear in spring and summer, followed by red cylindrical fruit. It is very variable, and many varieties and forms are grown. It holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit and is easy to grow; in Japan clumping plants are sold as a white-haired Mammillaria.

Light & Placement
Outdoors give bright sun, filtered light or afternoon shade; indoors a bright spot with some direct sun. Strong light bronzes the plant and encourages flowers and heavy wool, but long exposure to direct sun can burn it.
Watering
Cacti are grown much like summer-growing succulents. Water regularly in summer but never overwater; it is very sensitive to wet. Too much water and shade make it swollen and untidy. Keep it dry with good airflow in winter.

Kept dry it reportedly tolerates about -5°C, but keeping it at a minimum of 5-8°C through the rest period improves success.
Soil & Repotting
Use a very porous cactus mix with little organic matter. As it is rot-prone, keep it in a pot that is not too large and repot every 2-3 years.

It grows fast, offsetting from the base to fill a 25 cm pot in a few years. It is easily propagated from offsets as cuttings, or from seed.

Grown in a mineral mix with good light and ventilation it is almost pest-free. The hooked centrals snag skin and clothing, so wear thick gloves when repotting.
