Agave titanota 'Hoju'

'Hoju' ('sacred jewel') is a named selection sold as Agave titanota. According to a Japanese succulent encyclopedia it has broad leaves with brown teeth, and the name seems to refer to its leaves staying closed into a ball; the author's own plant has not grown very ball-like, though, which may reflect watering. It is thought to be Taiwanese, but its history is entirely unknown. With its ball-like habit it gives an impression similar to Hakugei, but the two are easy to tell apart by the teeth: Hakugei has a thin white margin and small white teeth, whereas Hoju's teeth are brown. Specialist nurseries sometimes sell it in 'titanota classics' sets alongside Hakugei and Hades. Variegated plants are sold separately as Hoju Nishiki, and the romanisation varies between Hoju and Houju. Plants traded as titanota also include what has recently been described as A. oteroi, and the classification is not settled. It is not common in Japan and appears only occasionally at specialist nurseries. To keep a rounded shape, grow it hard with strong light, good airflow and sparing water.

The Agave titanota 'Hoju' grows to Titanota rosettes range from 30 to 90 cm across (little data per cultivar).
