Fockea Edulis
BeginnerFockea edulis
Known as Martian Plant in Japan, with a potato-like caudex producing climbing vines.
About
Fockea edulis is native to dry regions of South Africa and Namibia, belonging to the Apocynaceae family (formerly Asclepiadaceae). In Japan it is affectionately known as the Martian Plant (Kasei-jin), a nickname inspired by the bizarre, knobby, irregular caudex from which slender twining stems emerge. The caudex swells into large, irregular forms with age. During the growing season, vines extend with small elliptical leaves. Flowers are small but fragrant. The species name edulis (edible) refers to traditional food use, but cultivated specimens should not be consumed. Growth is relatively reliable and the plant is considered one of the more forgiving caudex species, suitable for beginners. Bright light to full sun and well-draining soil suit it well. Generous watering from spring through autumn gives way to near-drought in winter. It tolerates brief exposure to around 5°C but should be protected from frost. Its quirky appearance and easy care make it a popular gateway species.
