Agave titanota 'Black Panther'

'Black Panther' (Japanese: Kurohyo) is a named selection sold as Agave titanota. According to a Japanese succulent encyclopedia its tooth bands are fairly narrow, but its broad leaves resemble Juggernaut, and a long, sharp tip spine gives it an aggressive silhouette. Young plants can look darker than other titanota, but a Japanese succulent encyclopedia says it cannot tell whether that is down to growing conditions or just the power of the name, so plants do not necessarily turn as black as the name suggests. No source documents its raiser or history. It differs from Juggernaut, which has similar leaf width, by its longer, sharper tip spine, and it can also be confused with 'Hades', which has brown teeth and a long black spine, so check the spine and teeth in photos of the actual plant. Plants traded as titanota also include what has recently been described as A. oteroi, and the classification is not settled. In Japan it is sold by specialist nurseries and online shops, sometimes as hand-picked specimens. Care is the same as for other titanota: strong light, good airflow and a dry regime keep the leaves compact and true to form.
