Agave oteroi 'Filigree'
IntermediateAgave oteroi 'Filigree'
A selection with broad, very short grey-green leaves fringed with countless long, narrow, wavy teeth like eyelashes. Selected by a US nursery from an FO-076 seedling and released in 2010, it is formally a cultivar of Agave oteroi.
About
Filigree is usually sold as titanota in Japan, but the US nursery that raised it names it Agave oteroi 'Filigree'. According to the grower's records, seed was collected in 2005 from an FO-076 plant (collector Felipe Otero's number for what was later described as Agave oteroi) that had flowered in a California enthusiast's garden in 2004; a seedling was selected for its tight habit and long, eyelash-like teeth, then named and released in 2010. The leaves are broad, very short and grey-green, with a reddish-brown tip spine and long, narrow, wavy, recurved teeth along the margins. The teeth emerge golden and age to grey-white. It grows slowly to about 30-60 cm tall and 60-90 cm wide. A Japanese succulent encyclopedia points to the very numerous, wavy-looking teeth and a rounded form close to 'Ohi Kabutogani Nishiki' as identifying features, and gives its Chinese name. A crested form is sold under a separate name. In Japan it is widely available from specialist nurseries and online shops.
