Agave titanota 'Hades'

'Hades' is a named Agave titanota selection born in Taiwan. According to a Japanese succulent encyclopedia its hallmark is an exceptionally long tip spine ('top spine') that shines black and wavers, which together with the brown teeth gives it a sinister elegance. It was among the first named selections after 'Caesar' and rivals it in popularity, though it is somewhat less common. The frequently seen name 黒帝斯 (黑帝斯) is a Chinese phonetic rendering of Hades, read 'kokuteishi' in Japanese, and 'Kyoryu Shiga', 'Kyoryu Gashi' and 'Inferno' are also given as synonyms. It differs from white-toothed Caesar and Hakugei in its brown teeth and long black tip spine. It is now also sold as tissue-cultured plants, so size and quality vary by seller even under the same name. Plants traded as titanota also include what has recently been described as A. oteroi, and the classification is not settled. In Japan it is a standard cultivar, included for example in specialist nurseries' titanota sets.

The Agave titanota 'Hades' grows to Titanota rosettes range from 30 to 90 cm across (little data per cultivar).
