Agave titanota 'Panda'

Kumaneko ('Panda') is a Taiwan-raised selection sold as Agave titanota. According to a Japanese succulent encyclopedia, its teeth are modest but its leaves are broad and blue-grey, giving a plant that looks both powerful and cool. Where many named titanota are prized for large white teeth or fierce spines, Panda is appreciated for leaf colour and width. No source documents its raiser or naming. Many other pale-leaved, lightly toothed plants exist, and it is hard to tell Panda from blue-leaved titanota seedlings by eye, so buy plants with a clear parentage or check leaf width and colour in photos of the actual plant. Plants traded as titanota also include what has recently been described as A. oteroi, and the classification is not settled. In Japan it is offered by specialist nurseries, online shops and auctions, though not in large numbers. Care is the same as for other titanota: strong light, good airflow and a dry regime keep the leaves compact and true to form. In poor light the blue-grey tone fades and the leaves stretch.
