Agave titanota 'South Africa Diamond'

'South Africa Diamond' is a named selection sold as Agave titanota and often searched for by its abbreviation, SAD. According to a Japanese succulent encyclopedia its feature is huge white teeth that are broad in the middle; some claim the teeth can reach a third of the leaf, though plants like that are rarely seen. As the name suggests it is said to have come from South Africa, but its roots are unknown. Tissue-cultured plants have made it easier to obtain, but after a controversy over fakes, clones with a documented parent plant are valued very differently from the rest. A Japanese succulent encyclopedia notes that plants bought under the name can develop quite different teeth once grown on. Compared with white-toothed Caesar or Hakugei, SAD is distinguished by individual teeth that grow broad and large. Plants traded as titanota also include what has recently been described as A. oteroi, and the classification is not settled. In Japan it is widely sold by specialist nurseries, online shops and auctions.

The Agave titanota 'South Africa Diamond' grows to Titanota rosettes range from 30 to 90 cm across (little data per cultivar).
