About
'Blue Bird' is an Echeveria hybrid prized for leaves heavily coated in white bloom. A Japanese succulent reference credits it to Frank Reinelt. Its parentage is usually given as E. cante × E. peacockii 'Subsessilis', but some consider E. colorata × E. peacockii more likely; sources differ, so it remains unsettled. Its powdery leaves show a soft gradient of pale colours. It tends to form a short stem, and at some seasons the outer leaves droop; these later wither and the rosette opens up fresh from the centre. Japanese references class it as a spring–autumn grower that, like most echeverias, dislikes humid summers and cold winter winds. Note that there is also a Crassula 'Blue Bird', an entirely different plant with the same English name, so check the genus when buying. It is regularly stocked by succulent specialists in Japan and is used for colour in mixed plantings.

A spring–autumn grower. Water when the pot is completely dry, keeping water off the leaves: thoroughly in spring and autumn, sparingly in humid summer heat, and in winter just enough to moisten the top third of the pot.
