Goat's horn cactus (Astrophytum capricorne, called Zuihogyoku in Japan) wraps its body in long, twisted brown spines. Its gray-green skin is dotted with white flecks, and in summer it produces large yellow flowers with red centers. The contrast between the rugged spines and the showy blooms is its main appeal, and the species name refers to a goat's horn. This perennial gradually grows from an oval to a cylindrical form over the years, reaching up to 50 cm tall and 10 cm wide. It is rated for intermediate growers, but with a good watering rhythm and well-draining conditions, you can enjoy watching its shape change over time.

关于瑞凤玉
Goat's horn cactus: twisted brown spines, white-flecked skin and red-centered yellow summer flowers. Care tips on light, watering, soil and repotting for intermediate growers.
开始养护瑞凤玉前需要了解的7件事
1Bright, Airy Spot
Astrophytum species like plenty of light, so outdoors choose a sunny, well-ventilated spot. Too little light tends to make the plant stretch and lose its compact shape. Indoors, use a bright windowsill and keep the air moving.
2Water When Dry
Water thoroughly only after the soil has dried out completely. The fleshy body stores moisture, so erring on the dry side is safer than overwatering. Pour water around the base rather than over the plant, since droplets left on the skin in daylight can leave marks.
3Fast-Draining Soil
Drainage comes first: use a cactus and succulent mix, or blend small-grain akadama with pumice. Soil that holds too much water invites root rot. An unglazed clay pot dries out faster and makes watering easier to manage.
4Repot in Growing Season
Repot when roots fill the pot, ideally in spring to early summer during the growing season. Since the plant can reach up to 50 cm tall, choose a deeper pot that keeps it stable, and wait a few days after repotting for root wounds to dry before watering. The spines are long and twisted, so wrap the plant in thick gloves or folded newspaper when handling it.
5Summer Sun and Rainy Season
Summer is flowering season, but intense midsummer sun can scorch the skin, so light shade or afternoon shelter helps. During the rainy season or long spells of rain, move the plant under cover and keep air moving to prevent rot.
6Dry Winters, Frost Protection
Growth slows in winter, so cut back watering sharply and keep the plant on the dry side. Frost damages the plant, so overwinter it in a bright spot protected from frost and cold wind. When spring warms up, resume watering with small amounts and increase gradually.
7Choosing a Healthy Plant
Look for a firm body with no discoloration or soft spots, especially at the base. Check that the twisted spines and white flecks look intact and that there are no large scars. Photos and the grower's notes on the listing can tell you about growing conditions and pot size.
瑞凤玉的常见问题
- Q.Can a beginner grow it?
- A.It is rated for intermediate growers. Getting comfortable with basic cactus watering and placement first makes it easier to avoid problems such as root rot. When in doubt, err on the side of less water.
- Q.How large does it get?
- A.It is a perennial that elongates over the years, reaching up to 50 cm tall and 10 cm wide. As it grows taller, you may need a deeper pot, so plan repotting to match its growth.
- Q.When does it flower?
- A.It produces large yellow flowers with red centers in summer. To enjoy the blooms, give it plenty of light and keep the plant healthy.
- Q.How often should I water it?
- A.Rather than following a fixed schedule, judge by how dry the soil is. From spring to autumn, water thoroughly once the soil has dried, and cut back sharply in winter.
- Q.How should I care for it in winter?
- A.Frost damages the plant, so keep it somewhere protected from frost. A bright indoor spot or a sunny, rain-sheltered place under the eaves works well. Cut watering back sharply and keep the soil on the dry side.
