开始养护紫勋前需要了解的7件事

1. 1Give it plenty of light

   Aim for a bright, sunny spot with good airflow, such as a rain-free outdoor space or a sunny windowsill. With too little light, the heads tend to stretch and the window patterns lose definition. In midsummer, avoid harsh direct sun and stuffy air by moving the plant to a breezy, brightly shaded spot.

2. 2Water generously in autumn

   It is a winter grower, active from autumn into winter. From September to November, water thoroughly whenever the soil has dried, and don't let it go dry while it is flowering. In winter, water on warm days, and during spring molting hold off until the old leaves have completely withered. During summer dormancy, just mist it two or three times a month.

3. 3Fast-draining soil and pot

   Put drainage first and use a mineral-based mix built on materials such as akadama, pumice and river sand. Because the roots grow long and downward, a pot with drainage holes and some depth works best. A layer of fine gravel on the surface helps keep the area around the heads from staying damp.

4. 4Hold water during shedding

   From winter into spring, a new pair of leaves emerges from between the old ones in a process called shedding. Stop watering and wait until the old leaves have shrunk to a thin, dry skin and been absorbed by the new pair. Watering partway through puts extra strain on the plant.

5. 5Repot in autumn

   Repot when the roots have become crowded or the soil has broken down, ideally in autumn as the growing season begins. It is not needed every year, and once every few years is often enough. Let the soil dry well beforehand, and hold off watering right after repotting so the roots can settle.

6. 6Getting through summer and winter

   Summer is the dormant season, so skip watering and let the plant rest in a breezy, brightly shaded place. In winter, bring it under eaves or indoors so it avoids frost and freezing, while still giving it plenty of light. Adjusting watering and placement with each season is the key to growing it for years.

7. 7Choosing a healthy plant

   Choose a plant whose heads are nicely firm, with no wrinkles, wounds, mold or mushy spots. Check that the window patterns are clear and that the base does not wobble. A clump is typically about 8 to 15 heads, so compare the condition of each head as well.
