1. 1Bright, Shaded Spot

   Strong direct sun can scorch the leaves, so a spot behind a sheer curtain or in bright shade suits it best. Gasteria tolerates lower light better than many succulents, but in a very dark place the leaves tend to lose their color and gloss. It does well on an indoor windowsill.

2. 2Water When Dry

   The thick leaves store water, so wait until the soil is dry all the way through, then water until it drains from the bottom. Overwatering that leads to root rot is the most common mistake, so when in doubt, wait. Pour water at the base of the plant so it does not pool between the leaves.

   Its roots grow long and thick like a burdock root, so plant it in a tall, deep pot like an orchid pot, using a well-draining mix. A ready-made succulent and cactus mix is the easy choice, and adding akadama or pumice improves drainage further. Choose a pot with a drainage hole.

4. 4No Rush to Repot

   Because it grows slowly, frequent repotting is unnecessary. Repot when the pot is packed with roots or the old soil has stopped draining well, and do it in spring or autumn while the plant is actively growing. Wait a few days after repotting before watering to help protect damaged roots.

5. 5Keep Cool in Summer

   It dislikes hot, humid weather and midsummer direct sun, so move it to a breezy, bright, shaded spot. Water sparingly during muggy weather, and if you do water, do it in the cool of the evening. Stuffy air can cause rot to start at the base of the plant.

6. 6Protect from Frost

   In cold weather, keep it away from frost and freezing; if it lives outdoors, bring it into a bright indoor spot. Growth slows in winter, so water much less and let the soil stay on the dry side. On a chilly windowsill, moving it away from the glass at night adds a margin of safety.

7. 7Choosing a Healthy Plant

   Look for thick, firm leaves with clearly marked white bumps and a tidy two-row arrangement. Check that the base does not wobble and that there is no blackening, stickiness or white cottony residue between the leaves. Since this plant grows slowly, damaged leaves take a long time to recover, so starting with a healthy one matters.
