Parthenocissus tricuspidata
A deciduous climber of the grape family prized for fiery autumn colour, clinging to walls and trees with adhesive pads on its tendrils. Bonsai use this deciduous 'summer ivy', not evergreen English-type ivy.

Pseudocydonia sinensis
A deciduous rose-family tree from China whose bark flakes into a mottled greenish-brown pattern. Pale pink flowers in spring are followed by large yellow fruits 10–15 cm long; it has been called the king of fruiting bonsai.

Euonymus hamiltonianus
A deciduous spindletree whose square, pale pink fruits hang in clusters in autumn and split into four to reveal red-coated seeds. Good autumn colour too. Male and female flowers are on separate plants, so a male tree ensures fruit.

Sorbus commixta
A deciduous rose-family tree whose pinnate leaves turn scarlet in autumn, with clusters of red berries that stay on after leaf fall. Flat heads of small white flowers appear in early summer. It prefers cool climates and is hard to keep long in warm lowlands.
Miyasama trident maple
Acer buergerianum 'Miyasama'
Said to descend from a Taiwanese trident maple brought to the Fushimi-no-miya imperial household, and also called Taiwan kaede. It branches more densely and colours more brightly in autumn than ordinary trident maple, and is used for small bonsai and group plantings.
Satsuki azalea 'Yata-no-kagami'
Rhododendron indicum 'Yata-no-kagami'
An old satsuki of unknown parentage dating from the Meiji era, with medium deep-red flowers marked by a large white centre. Its glossy, thick leaves colour beautifully in autumn, and it is vigorous and easy to train.

Stewartia monadelpha
A deciduous tree of the camellia family whose smooth, red-brown trunk is counted among Japan's three most beautiful barks. Small white flowers 1.5–2 cm across nod in early summer, and leaves turn red in autumn. Smaller in flower and leaf than Stewartia pseudocamellia.

Euonymus alatus
A deciduous shrub counted among the world's three great autumn-colour trees, turning brilliant red. Corky wings along the stems are distinctive, and red-coated seeds appear in autumn. A single plant sets fruit.
