浇水

原本喜水，有叶期间土壤容易干。春秋季每天浇1～2次，夏季2～3次，冬季2～3天浇1次为目安，表土干燥后充分浇水。

温度/越冬

冬季休眠。防止盆土结冰和晚霜伤根，需在棚下或地窖等处保护。

用土/换盆

以赤玉土为主体，添加约20%排水良好的砂土。换盆在2月芽萌动前进行，与花后修剪同时进行。1～2年换盆1次，老树2～3年换盆1次。

肥料

喜肥树种。花后3～6月持续少量施肥，花芽形成的夏季停肥，9～11月秋肥要充足。选用磷酸含量丰富的果梅用肥料较好。

修剪/造型

花开5～7分时摘去花谢，保持树势，花后立即修剪。花芽在7～8月形成，成型树在5月左右摘去新芽4～6节。

病虫害/注意事项

注意蚜虫、红蜘蛛、介壳虫、蛀干的透翅蛾（有树液流出）、白粉病和黑星病。花梅易患溃疡病，要避免强风。不含花粉，有些年份不结实。

1. 1Placement & Light

   Flowering apricots do best outdoors in full sun with good air circulation. Shield the plant from harsh summer afternoon sun, and choose a spot where the pot won't freeze solid in winter.

2. 2When to Water

   Water thoroughly whenever the soil surface dries out, until it runs from the drainage holes. Keep a closer eye on moisture as flower buds swell and during the blooming period, since the soil dries faster then.

3. 3Choosing Soil

   Beni-chidori prefers a well-draining, airy soil mix. A bonsai blend based on akadama (baked clay granules) with some leaf mold is a good starting point.

4. 4Repotting Schedule

   Repot around February, before the buds break, together with the post-bloom pruning. Aim for once every one to two years (every two to three years for old trees), using a mix based on akadama with about 20 percent free-draining sand.

5. 5Pruning & Training

   Flower buds form on the previous year's growth, so pruning at the wrong time or place can reduce next year's blooms. Shape the tree with pruning right after the flowers finish.

6. 6Bloom Timing & Seasonal Care

   Beni-chidori blooms later than many other flowering apricot varieties. Exposing it to proper winter cold helps the flower buds develop, so you can enjoy its blooms even after other ume have finished.
