Heteranthera, also known as Stargrass, is a stem plant native to Brazil that forms lush, bushy growth thanks to its many side shoots. Its narrow, lance-shaped leaves in bright green are arranged alternately along upright stems. Because trimming the stems easily controls its height, it works equally well in the foreground or background of an aquascape. Rated beginner-friendly, it's a perennial that stays healthy for years when trimmed cuttings are replanted, a technique known as re-topping. When grown emersed, it produces small blue flowers, offering a different look above the waterline.

1Placement and Light
